Chances are, you’ve heard the saying “adopt, don’t shop.” Even though it’s well-known, many people still choose to buy from a breeder instead of adopting from their local shelter. There are many dogs at the shelter that are waiting for their forever homes and we’ve written this article to show you why adopting is a great decision.

Save a Life

When you adopt, you could literally be saving a life, especially if you’re adopting from a shelter that has a high euthanasia rate. Many of these shelters are packed full and can only give the dogs a certain amount of time to be adopted. In addition, you help save a life by opening up a spot for another dog in need, which could lead to them getting adopted and having an amazing life. While some shelters will keep a dog as long as needed, the animals tend to start losing hope and becoming depressed after so long. By adopting and giving them a loving home, you’ll make their life enjoyable and worth living.

Fight Against Puppy Mills

There’s a good chance that you’ve heard of puppy mills. These horrible places are where people breed dogs to make money. Most of the time, the breeders are more concerned with making as much money as possible rather than making sure the dogs are well taken care of. Not only do the animals endure cruel and filthy conditions, but they often suffer from untreated illnesses or conditions. Most dogs in the shelter that come from a puppy mill are either there because all of the dogs were confiscated or they became too old to keep producing a profit. Some of these dogs have never felt love or affection and they can have that after being adopted by a great family.

Depending on the breed, you could pay hundreds or thousands of dollars. This is especially true if you’re buying a purebred that comes with verified papers. On the other hand, you can save quite a bit of money when you adopt from a shelter. Most of their prices aren’t based on the breed and they usually base fees off of the dog’s size. In addition, buying from a breeder probably won’t include anything except first shots, while shelters will usually include things like all shots, microchip, and spay or neutering. You’ll want to talk to the shelter to see what exactly is included with the fee, but there’s a high chance that you’re going to get a much better deal.

Do Less Training

Since you never know where a dog came from or what its background is, there’s always a chance that it’ll already be trained. This is especially true for those dogs that were in loving homes but had to be surrendered for reasons out of the owner’s hands. What this means for you is that you won’t have to do as much training with one of these dogs. The exact training or skills that the dog has learned might be unknown, so you might be surprised to learn they can do certain things. If possible, ask the shelter employees if they know anything about what they’ve been trained or what tricks they know.

Give Seconds Chances

One final reason why you should adopt and not shop is that you can give dogs a second chance. There are many dogs at the shelter that have had horrible experiences and haven’t had the love or affection they deserve. By adopting and giving them these things, you can give them a second chance at a wonderful life. You can show them what it feels like to be loved and they won’t have to live in fear. You might find a best friend that loves you with everything they’ve got!

By adopting, you could be showing the dog more love than they’ve had before and you could be saving them. You never know what kinds of dogs you’ll see at the shelter and you might find that you fall in love with one. Even if you aren’t completely convinced, take a trip to the shelter and look at the dogs they have available because you might find your new best friend.
